The gorillas at Brookfield Zoo are always my favorite place to stop when we visit, so it’s sad to hear that they lost one of their oldest gorillas this week. What’s most remarkable is that the zookeepers allowed the surviving gorillas to say goodbye — a kind of gorilla wake (more here), which Brookfield Zoo pioneered. I continue to be fascinated by gorilla behavior that so closely resembles human tendencies.

Red light cameras seem to be all the rage right now for cash-strapped muncipalities interested in generating revenue under the guise of public safety. The people of Georgia have figured out how to beat red light cameras. They passed a law mandating a one-second longer yellow light. It seems that when motorists are given that one additional second, they are less likely to run the red lights … a lot less likely.

Allonzo Trier is 12 years old, and he’s one of the most highly recruited basketball players in the country. He has pro players, coaches, lawyers, agents, and sporting goods reps salivating over his potential. He’s in the sixth grade. Something has gone terribly wrong with the sport of basketball.

It’s still a few months away, but the new iPhone OS 3.0 looks promising. At long last, we get cut-and-paste, which remains one of the most glaring omissions from the current OS.

Pres. Barack Obama made a big media splash this week when he announced his NCAA tournament picks. It seems a little silly that this has been part of Obama’s media blitz, but now Nate Silver suggests that Obama’s picks might actually be politically-motivated.  It appears that Obama’s picks favor schools in swing states.

McGangBang: a McChicken Sandwich Inside a Double Cheeseburger. I’m not sure what I find more amazing — the fact that someone created this or the fact that someone has taken the time to document its origins and development. Does anyone else remember when Jack Black was on one of MTV’s shows a couple years ago and explained how he combined several McDonald’s meals into a single entree?

The 15 Strangest College Courses In America. A lot of the odd courses we found sound like lots of fun, but with tuition costs skyrocketing is it really worth it to spend thousands of dollars on fun diversions?

Gov. Bobby Jindal appeared on Sean Hannity’s America on FOX News. He defended his response to Obama’s joint address to Congress and talked about some of the ideas that were included in that widely panned speech:

“This is a real philosophical debate about how do we move our country forward,” Jindal said. “One side agrees with government spending and expansion. We believe in growing the private sector.”

In his speech last week, Jindal criticized the president’s $787 billion economic stimulus package as laden with unnecessary spending that had been added by a Democratic Congress. He talked of the need to cut taxes and limit government spending at a time when polls show a majority of Americans are looking to the federal government to reverse the economic downturn.
